A fire in a nightclub in Venezuela that killed 47 people could have been started deliberately.

Building security staff believe the fire was started by a gang of young men. They said the gang poured petrol around the disco's entrance after clashing with another group over a girl earlier in the evening.

The security chief said there had been similar confrontations between rival gangs in the "La Guajira" disco the previous week.

A police officer on duty outside the burnt-out disco said the fire could have been caused by a petrol bomb or similar device.
