Arsenal survived a late scare to beat London rivals Chelsea 3-2 despite two goals in the last five minutes from the visitors at Highbury this afternoon.

Arsene Wenger's side appeared to be coasting at 3-0 but the Blues hit back to silence the Highbury crowd but just failed to snatch an equaliser.

Striker Dennis Bergkamp was also denied his 100th goal for the Gunners but even that could not take the gloss off the defending champions' victory over their rivals.

The former Holland international thought he had reached his landmark when he challenged defender Marcel Desailly for Ashley Cole's left-wing cross in the ninth minute and the ball beat Carlo Cudicini.

However, there was some debate over who had the final touch and it was eventually given as an own goal to Desailly.

Thierry Henry laid on the second for Giovanni van Bronkhorst eight minutes from time before the Frenchman added the Gunners' third and his 98th goal in all competitions for Arsenal.

Mario Stanic struck late for Chelsea and with four minutes remaining Emmanuel Petit capitalised on a David Seaman-Sol Campbell howler to set up a grandstand finish.

The win restored Arsenal's five-point cushion at the top ahead of Manchester United, for whom England midfielder Paul Scholes snatched a dramatic last-gasp winner after a late comeback gave them a 2-1 victory over Sunderland.

United were heading for their sixth defeat of the season after Juan Sebastian Veron's first-half own goal but Scholes' international captain David Beckham netted the leveller with nine minutes remaining.

Scholes then headed the winner with just moments remaining to move United into second in table.

Leeds secured their third win in a row with a 2-0 success over Birmingham, set up by Eirik Bakke's sixth-minute goal. Republic of Ireland international Gary Kelly crossed to Australia striker Mark Viduka who headed down to Bakke to nod home.

Ali Benarbia should have put City ahead just after the interval when he rolled his shot wide of the target but a cross from Sun Jihai eight minutes from time was headed home by Cameroon international Marc-Vivien Foe before Radzinski struck with seconds remaining.

Aston Villa recorded a 2-0 victory against strugglers Bolton after Dion Dublin gave them an ideal start. Left-back Alan Wright, in only his sixth game of the season, crossed towards Lee Hendrie who cleverly dummied for Dublin to side-foot home in the eighth minute.

The home side had to wait until 10 minutes from time for their second when Darius Vassell pressured Gudni Bergsson into conceding possession and he cut inside to thread a shot under Jussi Jaaskelainen.

Second-half substitute Keith Gillespie provided the inspiration for Blackburn's 1-0 win over Middlesbrough as his 57th-minute cross found its way to Dwight Yorke, who slotted home the opener.

Southampton striker James Beattie his a career-best 13th goal of the season against the run of play to notch a 1-0 victory at home to Tottenham.

There was relentless second-half pressure by the visitors but Beattie, who was anonymous for most of the game, ran past Dean Richards to curled a shot past Kasey Keller.

Fulham's game against West Brom at Loftus Road was postponed this morning because of a waterlogged pitch while a 1.45p.m. pitch inspection at The Valley resulted in Charlton v West Ham also being called off, meaning the Hammers stay bottom of the table.
