Tomorrow’s Apprentice Boys parades across the North are expected to pass off peacefully after a number of residents’ groups declared their intention not to protest.

A series of feeder parades are due to pass through the flashpoint areas of the Ormeau Road and Ardoyne in Belfast on their way to main parade in Derry.

However residents’ groups have said they are satisfied with the arrangements and do not consider the parades "contentious".

Nevertheless, the RUC today said security had been stepped up across the North as a precaution.

A spokeswoman said a number of extra personnel and resources had been deployed.

A spokesman for the Apprentice Boys in Derry told ireland.com: "It is not our intention to give offence to anyone or to be triumphalist in any way".

He said the Apprentice Boys wished only to commemorate the siege of Derry in a peaceful manner.

However, SDLP Councillor Ms Dolores Kelly speaking in advance of the potentially controversial Apprentice Boys parade in Lurgan tomorrow, called on all those involved to behave responsibly and sensibly, and for those protesting to do so peacefully.

Ms Kelly welcomed the decision by the organisation to curtail its march to the war memorial area in the town.
