MS Roisin McAliskey, who is seven months pregnant and awaiting court proceedings on extradition to Germany in connection with the IRA bombing of a British army base, was remanded in custody yesterday pending a bail application hearing tomorrow.

At a hearing at Bow Street magistrate's court the magistrate, Mr Peter Badge, remanded Ms McAliskey to Holloway prison and stated he hoped a date for the extradition proceedings could be agreed next month.

Ms McAliskey's bail application will be heard in chambers at the High Court tomorrow afternoon. It is expected Mr Justice Mitchell will announce his decision after hearing evidence from the governor of Holloway on her health and prison conditions.

It is understood the hearing was adjourned on Tuesday because of a dispute over claims by the Crown Prosecution Service that Ms McAliskey was not locked in her cell for the most of the day and was able to use the prison swimming pool and gym.

After the remand hearing, Ms McAliskey's solicitor, Ms Gareth Peirce, said her client's prisons conditions had worsened since her downgrading last week from being a high risk Category A prisoner to a standard Category A.

"Roisin spends more time in her cell now and is not allowed to associate with the other prisoners.

I was also surprised to see armed police officers outside the court for the first time" she said

Ms Peirce added that the date had not been set for Ms McAliskey's appeal to the House of Lords on whether Germany can request the extradition of a British citizen while refusing to extradite its own nationals.

Outside the magistrate's court, Mr Sean McCotter, Ms McAliskey's partner and father of her unborn child, said she was angry about what the prison authorities had said about her conditions during the bail hearing and was anxious to learn whether she will be able to keep the baby with her in prison.

A decision is expected today following a meeting of social workers, child care experts and prison officials.

Ms McAliskey (25) from Coalisland, Co Tyrone, is accused of being involved in the IRA mortar bombing on the British army base at Osnabruck last June. No one was injured in the attack.
