Ankara - An earthquake measuring 5.5 on the Richter scale shook Turkey's northeastern provinces yesterday, but there were no immediate reports of casualties or damage, the Kandilli seismological institute in Istanbul said.

The epicentre of the quake was located in the city of Kars, near the Turco-Georgian border, the institute said. The tremor was also felt strongly in the provinces of Ardahan, Agri, Igdir and Erzurum. Two earthquakes hit Turkey in August and November killing, some 20,000 and 800 people respectively
