United Nations - East Timor's referendum on its future has been postponed by the UN Secretary General, Mr Kofi Annan, until August 30th, a UN spokesman confirmed yesterday. Mr Annan made the decision in consultation with Indonesian and Portuguese authorities and after judging on Monday that security conditions in the territory were insufficient for fair election monitoring. Meanwhile, 24 people died in fresh clashes between Christians and Muslims in Indonesia's devastated island of Ambon, hospitals said yesterday.
