AN “ANIMAL ambulance” has begun rounds in the southwest in what is believed to be the first service of its kind in the region.

The Kenmare Veterinary Centre, which already has accreditation as an animal hospital, is behind the conversion of the people’s ambulance to suit animal needs.

Animal surgeon and vet Dr Henk Offereins said it took the practice several weeks to complete the conversion of the ambulance, which they bought from the fire service. Stretchers and seating were stripped out and an animal bench and other equipment installed.

The vehicle can cater for calves, foals and small animals.

It visits towns in the Beara and Iveragh peninsulas, Roughty Valley and west Cork on set days of the week. This is “to make it easier” for farmers and pet owners to bring their animals in for a check-up, vaccination, neutering or treatment, Dr Offereins said.

“We are in a rural area where it is difficult for people to travel. But the purpose is also to increase awareness of animal care.”
