Kiev - A reactor at a nuclear power plant in southern Ukraine was shut down by the station's alarm system yesterday after a minor malfunction of safety equipment, the state-run nuclear energy company, Energoatom, said.

No radiation was released during the incident, the company spokeswoman, Ms Nadezhda Shumak, said.

Ms Shumak said that reactor two at the Pivdeno-Ukrainskaya nuclear station, located 300 km south of the capital Kiev, had shut down two days after returning to operation following five months of repair works.
