An adopted woman aged 22 who was upset and depressed because her birth mother had not responded to her letters took a fatal overdose of painkillers after writing letters to her parents and boyfriend, an inquest heard yesterday.

Earlier the woman had been out for a drink with her boyfriend and they had argued over her search for her natural mother. He left the pub. Next morning he and a relative found the woman on the floor of the apartment.

A post mortem examination showed that death was due to cerebral depression caused by taking an overdose of pain-killing tablets and alcohol.

Recording a verdict of death by suicide, the Dublin City Coroner, Dr Brian Farrell, said it was a particularly tragic case.
