Drug dealers forced a young heroin addict to transport cannabis worth £400,000 because he owed them money, a court was told yesterday.

Shane Mulvenna (22), of St Mary's Road, Ballsbridge, pleaded guilty in Dublin Circuit Criminal Court to having 40 kg of cannabis for supply on November 13th, 1997. Mr Anthony Sammon SC said his client's role had been only that of an important cog. He had become a heroin addict and had debts with "persons who wished to use him". He was made drive a car with the drugs.

Judge Cyril Kelly agreed to adjourn the sentence to February 24th for the preparation of a probation report. Det Garda Ambrose Whitty, of the Garda National Drugs Unit, said there was no objection to bail.
