Champions League Round-Up

AC Milan 4 Deportivo 1

Brazilian Kaka scored twice as European champions AC Milan took a giant step towards the Champions League semi-finals with a crushing 4-1 win over Deportivo la Coruna in last night's quarter-final, first leg match.

Deportivo took the lead in the 11th minute thanks to Walter Pandiani's header but Milan drew level on the stroke of halftime with a superbly executed goal from Kaka who took a Cafu cross down on his thigh before volleying home.

The Serie A leaders then struck three times in an explosive opening eight minutes of the second half.

Just 20 seconds after the restart Ukrainian striker Andriy Shevchenko drove the ball past Jose Molina after losing two defenders, and Kaka produced another deadly piece of finishing, firing home from the edge of the area after being set up by Clarence Seedorf.

Andrea Pirlo completed the blitz with a superb, curling free-kick from 25 metres in the 53rd minute.

Porto 2 Lyon 0

In the night's other quarter-final goals from Deco Souza and Ricardo Carvalho gave Porto a 2-0 win at home to Olympique Lyon

Deco managed to steer in a snap shot from Benni McCarthy in the 44th minute to give Porto the lead in a one-sided match.

Carlos Alberto came close to adding a second at the start of the second half when he raced in from the right touchline and fired a shot over the bar.

Porto continued to create chances and they were rewarded for their patient approach when Carvalho headed in a Deco free kick from the right for the second after 71 minutes.

The closest the French side came to an away goal that would have given them greater hope for the second leg was in the 39th minute when the ball broke to Sidney Govou on the edge of the box but his shot was deflected over.

The winners of the tie will go on to face either holders AC Milan or Spanish side Deportivo Coruna in the semi-finals.
