IT IS a tale which has captured the imagination of writers and filmmakers for decades, and almost every generation has enjoyed its own film version of Mutiny on the Bounty.

Film fans and ship lovers are in for a treat when HMS Bounty, the three-masted schooner built for the 1960 film version starring Marlon Brando and Trevor Howard, pays a visit to Cobh in Cork harbour this weekend.

The visit, hosted by the Port of Cork, will see the vessel, under the command of Captain Robin Walbridge and an 18-strong crew, open its decks and galleys to the public for weekend tours.

Margaret Ramsay of the HMS Bounty Organisation, which owns the vessel, explained that it was built in Lunenberg, Nova Scotia, for the 1960 film version of the mutiny against Captain William Bligh in the South Pacific in 1789.

The 1935 film version starred Clark Gable and Charles Laughton. It has more recently been remade with Mel Gibson and Anthony Hopkins.

On a six-month tour of Europe, included participation in the Tall Ships event in Belfast in August, the HMS Bounty has built up a list of film credits, including Pirates of the Caribbean II.
