The company said the decision came after a detailed review of the its current operations and talks are under way with staff and their representatives.

The Craigavon site currently employs 616 people and is part of a company which is one of the largest producers of forklift trucks worldwide.

Plant Manager at Craigavon Alan Little said: "We are faced with an unfortunate global economic situation that is causing our company and many other companies trading in Europe to be unfavourably affected.

"These are difficult times and these are regrettable proposals forced on the company by global difficulties not of our making.

"Notwithstanding the difficulties, the company will endeavour to make every reasonable effort to sustain our business position as we progress through the current recession.

"This will include considering a temporary measure of introducing a reduced working week.

"We have been communicating closely with our employees and their representatives over the last number of months and following today's announcement we will now enter a period of consultation."
