The Department of Justice currently has 6,855 applications for asylum. The Minister, Mr O'Donoghue, in a written reply to Mr Ivor Callely (FF, Dublin North Central) said the majority of the applicants had no documentary evidence of identity. Furthermore, he added, the documents in the possession of some applicants had been provided by a facilitator for travel purposes and, accordingly, were not reliable.
