BANGKOK - A former monk has had his death sentence for the murder of a British tourist reduced to life in jail as part of an amnesty for the 50th anniversary of King Bhumibol Adulyadej's reign, a government official said yesterday.

Twenty five thousand convicts will be released and all 45,000 other Thai prisoners will get their sentences reduced, Deputy Interior Minister Mr Sorachai Montrivat said in a press statement.
