The leaders of Ireland's main white collar union, MSF, have called for a £1,000 rebate for "all compliant PAYE taxpayers" from the Exchequer. Many of MSF's 20,000 members in the Republic work within the financial services sector.

A motion was passed at its executive's meeting in Dublin yesterday calling for the rebate to go to PAYE taxpayers "who have been paying their taxes in good faith for the past several years, while throughout this period a whole section of society, with the alleged complicity of some financial institutions, were ripping them off through tax evasion, via bogus non-resident accounts".

It says that PAYE workers suffered through poorer provision of schools, hospitals and other services.
