Cork Walking Month

The Cork Walking Month has begun but it is not too late to participate. The theme for the month is “a walk for all” and, including today, there are still 38 organised walks for people of all ages, abilities and fitness levels throughout Cork. The walks have been co-ordinated by the hillwalking clubs of Cork, Irish Heart Foundation walking leaders and the HSE with the support of Cork Sports Partnership. The variety and levels of the walks for the month vary, so there is a walk for everyone. The walks will continue until September 30th. Visit corksports.ie or phone 021-4665081.

Glover Walk

The North West Mountaineering Club is hosting the Glover Walk on Saturday, September 11th to mark the founding of the club by Joey Glover 55 years ago in 1955. The route of the walk is from Muckish to Errigal taking in six other summits in between – a distance of about 22km with a total ascent of 2,000m. Numbers are restricted so it is advisable to pre-register.

This is a demanding walk so close attention should be paid to equipment and fitness levels. Email: gloverwalk@googlemail.com.

Mourne Marathon

The Mourne Mountain Marathon takes place on September 18th and 19th. This two-day endurance and navigation event is open to walkers, hikers and runners, and this year is open to juniors (16 to 17-year-olds) when partnered by a parent or guardian). Participants compete in teams of two.

The marathon is run on a voluntary and non-profit basis by a team with many years of experience in organising and competing in this type of event. The fee per team is €90. Visit mourne2day.com.
