World Animal Week:World Animal Week ends tomorrow. The idea behind the week is to raise the standard of animal welfare worldwide and, more particularly, to encourage pet owners to take the best care they can of their animals.
For children who don’t have pets – but want to see some super cute animals – there are several new-borns to visit around the country.
To mark this special animal week, all weekend both Dublin Zoo and Fota Wildlife Park in Cork are holding special events.
There are free talks at Dublin Zoo and Fota Wildlife Park while Fota also has arts and crafts, face painting and competitions.
Both zoos had a busy summer with several new births.
At Fota Zippy the zebra arrived in August while earlier in the summer two new baby giraffes were born, Conan and Zedward.
At Dublin Zoo there have been three recent additions: a hippopotamus calf; and two red panda cubs.
The panda cubs were born at the beginning of August but have only just started to come out into the open – just after they were born their mother Angelina kept moving the cubs around to keep them protected, but now there’s a chance to spot them.
