SMALL PRINT:SICK OF multiplexes and fancy a different sort of film in a different sort of setting? Hollywood Babylon is a new midnight film club in Dublin running on fortnightly Saturdays from April to October.

It’s already two films in – having shown the 1977 Japanese haunted house horror film Hausu followed by Society, and going by its projected calendar, the next event will be Saturday, May 28th.

It’s not your average film club. The venue remains semi-secret (you have to email them to find out where it is. We know, but that would spoil the fun) and it’s a cheap night out too, because you can bring your own beers.

Plus, with every screening, a new re-imagined screen print film poster is commissioned, which will form an exhibition in October. So far, artists Chris Judge and Mark Wickham have created one-off art works for the club.

Don’t expect an overly serious vibe though, because Hollywood Babylon plans only to screen “the best, worst and most disreputable movies that ever fondled human eyeballs . . . roughly speaking – movies best seen after midnight, in company and with beer.” Each screening is preceded by “a host of ridiculous, dumb, shocking and awful trailers.”

Alternative cinema experiences are having something of a renaissance at the moment, with the Movie Junction drive-in in Cork, monthly Sing Along Cinema shows at the Button Factory in Dublin, Róisín Dubh in Galway and Pavilion in Cork, and Club Blas events monthly at City Arts, Dublin that focus on Celtic language films.

The next Hollywood Babylon film has yet to be announced, but you can find out more information and register for future events at hollywoodbabylondublin.tumblr.com.
