As career changes go, moving from the world of Irish theatre to life as an acupuncturist might seem pretty unlikely, but this is what Sarah Ling has done. The Irish-Chinese producer-turned-complementary therapist opened Ling Acupuncture in the recently renovated Nu Essence Day Spa on Dublin’s South Anne Street, a very different undertaking from the projects she worked on with Bedrock Productions.

After four years as a theatre producer with the company, Ling decided to turn her interest in traditional Chinese medicine into a full-time career. Her training involved a clinical work placement at a hospital in Nanjing, eastern China, and the experience showed her how acupuncture can be used to complement conventional medical practice – in China, the ancient therapy is often used in conjunction with modern treatments.

Ling offers treatments for stress, pain, insomnia and morning sickness, among other conditions, and she also offers cosmetic acupuncture and support for those who are trying to quit smoking. Her theatrical background hasn’t been entirely left behind, however – sound designer Vincent Doherty composed the calming ambient music that accompanies each treatment.
