VW classic still turns heads

SecondHandSense:AS THE Volkswagen Golf revolutionised the motor industry 35 years ago, so too did the Golf GTi a short time later. The GTi created a legion of pretenders after its launch in 1976 and the "hot hatch" generation was born. Peugeot got in on the act with the 205 GTi and Suzuki came out with a GTi version of the Swift. It was quite a ridiculous craze but the Golf remained on a lofty perch as the others came and went.

The Golf GTi had everything going for it. Great performance, pace, handling and, most importantly, a formidable presence created by subtle yet sporty styling combined to make the car a classic. Not all of the succeeding Golf GTi’s maintained the original’s standards but the version launched in 2005, which continued until last year, restored the original car’s appeal.

So, in these troubled times, we are putting aside the normal criteria of fuel efficiency and practicality to look at a car that not only has the ability to still turn heads but that also gives one of the most rewarding drives ever for a car in its class.

Ordinarily, we would veer towards the diesel version but the 200-horsepower 2-litre petrol is something to celebrate. It is more than powerful but does not sound vulgar and delivers power smoothly. It will take the car from 0-100km in just over seven seconds but it is also happy about town. It is, however, a thirsty performer. But if you are a GTi fan your choice will be obvious – so more of the diesel on another day.

What caps the car’s appeal is the interior and exterior styling: sports seats, great instruments backlit in blue at night, a three-spoke steering wheel and everything else as it should be in a car of this class. The exterior avoids the brashness of almost every one of its competitors. A firm but acceptable ride, great grip and good balance all add to the rewarding driving experience.

The amazing thing about the car is it serves as a family car too – it will take two in the back in comfort. Add a good boot, six airbags, brake assist, a stability programme, traction control, air conditioning, xenon lights and a five-star EuroNCAP rating and you have quite a car.

A 2006 version with 70,000km on the clock is on offer at one garage for €17,950. A 2007 version with 27,000km is on offer for €19,995.
