97: Citroen C4 Spacetourer – remembering Picasso

Top 100 cars for 2020: Problem is it’s squeezed between two other Citroen MPVs

The big problem with the Spacetourer is not that people will continue to call it a Picasso for decades to come (a shame that the licensing deal with Pablo’s estate could not be continued) but that it’s squeezed between Citroen’s two other MPVs - the Berlingo and the SpaceTourer.

Both are van-based, and so both can offer much more space inside than can the C4, and both can be had for much better value. Put it this way - the cheapest C4 SpaceTourer costs €30,995.

The cheapest Berlingo is a mere €24,345. The most expensive C4 starts at €37,820 while for just a little more you could have the big SpaceTourer van with seats for eight (or, optionally, nine) and a still-massive boot. If you’re looking for a way to haul people and luggage around, the van-based cars are a much better option.

Where the C4 SpaceTourer scores, though, is in having a cabin that’s surprisingly high-quality in feel (perhaps ‘surprising’ is a little unkind, there) and in its long-range refinement and comfort. Plus, it makes way more sense for most of us than an SUV.

* A note on Co2 figures: For almost all the cars in the Top 100, we’ve quoted the stricter WLTP figures for Co2 emissions. A few are still quoted on their older NEDC2 figure, and that’s the number they’ll be taxed on. If you’re confused at all, just consult your local dealer for specific data for the make and model in which you’re interested.
