67: Nissan Qashqai – Colossal sales success starting to show its age

Top cars for 2020: Once the go-to crossover it’s still a good buy, but losing its edge to rivals

Nissan’s family SUV has been a colossal sales success since it was first launched in 2007. Even now, a dozen years on, and well into the lifetime of the second generation version, it’s still selling hugely and for a time in 2019 was actually Ireland’s best-selling car.

Time though has not been the kindest to the Qashqai, and to be blunt, it’s now feeling a little grey around the temples compared to some of its opposition. The cabin, in particular, looks and feels a touch too old.

The Qashqai has been ‘up-engined’ recently, with a new 1.3-litre turbo petrol which is a nice unit (and which is pretty economical) but the default 1.5 diesel is ageing fast (even if its extra weight adds much-needed steering feel). The boot, at 445-litres, is also rather on the small side if you’re trying to squeeze a growing family in. Still a decent car, but it’s lost its edge.

* A note on Co2 figures: For almost all the cars in the Top 100, we've quoted the stricter WLTP figures for Co2 emissions. A few are still quoted on their older NEDC2 figure, and that's the number they'll be taxed on. If you're confused at all, just consult your local dealer for specific data for the make and model in which you're interested.
