72: Toyota Yaris – the sensible and rational supermini option

Just updated and refreshed in time for 2018, the Toyota Yaris remains one of the more stolid and sensible cars you can buy, even if Toyota is attempting to inject some excitement into the range. It's doing that by embarking on a programme of racing the Yaris in the World Rally Championship (with some success already) and building a genuine hot hatch; the Yaris GMRN, which goes on sale next year with a supercharged 1.8-litre engine.

For now, the standout Yaris is the Hybrid version, which has been much improved from the disappointing early versions. It now manages reasonable fuel economy on the motorway, and is much more refined, even if you do have to pay a pretty chunky price tag to assuage your environmental conscience.

A 1.0-litre VVTI petrol version makes much more financial sense. Beautifully built, of course, and endlessly reliable, but lacking a little in the spark of entertainment one gets from the best small cars.
