58: Lexus RX450h – Smart styling and remarkable refinement

When we first encountered the latest Lexus RX450h, it felt a bit old-hat compared to plugin hybrid rivals such as the Volvo XC90 T8. No plug, no lithium-ion batteries, no electric-only range to speak of. However, spend some time with the RX and it all starts to become clear.

It’s tighter and lighter than most plugin rivals, and while that doesn’t translate into better handling (it’s actually quite roly-poly), it does translate into simplicity. And better all-round real world fuel economy too, even if you’d hardly describe it as frugal.

It is impressively silent, though (unless you venture onto mountain roads where the CVT gearbox allows too much drone) and the cabin, although clunky in places (especially the infotainment screen) is superbly comfy, and very spacious for five. Plus, we love the aggressive, edgy, styling.
