100: Ford S-Max – a hugely capable and appealing car

Top 100 cars for 2020: A better option than the hordes of identikit SUVs which are driving the S-Max out of the market

The S-Max is probably not long for this world. Ford is switching to an almost-all-SUV lineup, and so there’s no place left next to the hearth for a big MPV. The smaller C-Max and B-Max models have already departed this world, so the S-Max knows it’s next. Which is a shame - this is still a hugely capable and appealing car, with masses of space, great comfort, high levels of cabin quality, and handling that can be truly entertaining and engaging. It’s a better option, for most of us, than the hordes of identikit SUVs that are driving it out of the market, and we’re going to miss it when it’s gone.

Sum up: You'll miss it when it's gone.

* A note on Co2 figures: For almost all the cars in the Top 100, we’ve quoted the stricter WLTP figures for Co2 emissions. A few are still quoted on their older NEDC2 figure, and that’s the number they’ll be taxed on. If you’re confused at all, just consult your local dealer for specific data for the make and model in which you’re interested.
