Sometimes time-warps can be very gentle, pleasant places

Sometimes time-warps can be very gentle, pleasant places. And this is the case with John B Keane’s Letters of an Irish Publican.

Listen to the 40-year-old publican, yearning chastely and honourably for 18-year-old Antoinette Lingley while he is determinedly pursued by glamorous Dublin blow-in solicitor Grace Langtry, who is of a more “suitable” age for him. Yes, it’s simple, dated fun. But it leaves you with a nice warm feeling especially since it will be performed on the shores of Gougane Barra. Legend says that St Finbar built his monastery here as he thought the lake mirrored the face of God and, given the tangible sense of wonder in this place, that’s easy to believe. Admission is €18-€23 and the curtains are at 8.30 pm. The play will run from August 11th until 17th. Call 026-47069, or see www.gouganebarrahotel.com.
