New homes buyers can expect long delays in moving into their houses because of the worsening effects of the scaffolders' strike. Several developers have postponed the launches of new apartment and housing schemes until the autumn, hoping that the row will blow over, but for those who have paid their deposits, completion dates are slipping back towards Christmas in some cases.
In Ashbourne, where 230 houses were sold off the plans in a few days within the past month, the scaffolders seem intent on escalating picketing. Yesterday, they placed at least 20 pickets on the site. Cosgraves, who have always managed to steer clear from union trouble, are also having trouble in Blanchardstown. Work on their large apartment scheme has virtually ground to a halt. Builders must be concerned that if they give in to the scaffolders, they will have to share even more of their profits with other construction workers. A long strike will hardly suit the builders because with more development land due to become available, buyers are likely to have a wider choice towards the end of the year when prices are likely to stabilise.
