An energy cost of a fiver a day is only part of the appeal of Larchwood Lodge, a large timber home for sale in Duncormick, Co Wexford at €650,000.
The running cost has been calculated by the couple who live here. Given that they have three children, it presumably allows for quite an amount of cooking and washing, not to mention heating what is, at 305 sq m (3,400 sq ft) a spacious home, many of whose rooms have vaulted ceilings.
The five bedroom house, which sits on 4.2 acres, was described by Construct Magazine as “an eco statement par excellence”.
It was built by Riko House, a Slovenian manufacturer of architect designed, low energy, eco buildings. The company has won awards in the UK for its work and was a finalist in the Grand Designs awards, run by the Channel 4 series presented by Kevin McCloud.
Much of its low energy cost is down to a very high level of insulation, plus the use of a highly efficient heat pump system which provides for underfloor heating throughout.
The house, which is for sale through Power Property in Wexford town, is in a secluded setting, on a site bordered by mature trees. The property includes a garage and a standalone garden studio in a larch-clad finish, as well as extensive decking.
Larchwood Lodge is 15 minutes from Wexford town and a seven-minute drive from the beach at Kilmore Quay.
