Christie’s has announced the sale of Baroque Egg with Bow (Blue/Turquoise) by artist Jeff Koons at auction in London on June 27th with a pre-sale estimate of £2.5-£3.5 million. Christie’s said the “monumental” stainless steel sculpture was one of five versions in different colours made by the artist.
Jeff Koons, born in Pennsylvania in 1955, is one of the most famous artists in the United States.
He is widely lauded by some art critics and his work, which sells for millions of dollars, is owned by many distinguished museums.
One of his gold-leaf plated porcelain statues, titled Michael Jackson and Bubbles, (of the singer cuddling his pet chimpanzee) sold at Sotheby’s New York for $5.6 million.
The Easter egg sculpture is from a series called “Celebration” in which Koons recorded “life’s milestones throughout the calendar year”.
A Christie’s spokesman said: “With its shimmering, mirrored surface the work recalls a monumental Easter egg as if rendered out of solid chocolate, belonging to some giant confectionary stand.”
