Ballilogue Clochán, the boutique farmhouse inn near Inistioge, Co Kilkenny, is worth a detour, not just for its cosy, cottage-style bedrooms and long, leisurely breakfasts, but for the sheer style of the surroundings, designed by owner Pat McCarthy.
The one-time fashion designer is now a globe-hopping design consultant, but still finds time to tend the chickens and greet guests. His latest venture at Ballilogue is Mrs Meaney's Cottage – a tiny house he has refurbished exactly as it was in the heyday of his neighbour, Mrs Meaney, complete with John and Jackie portrait, open fireplace and ancient delft.
