‘Chocolate is something that binds my family, along with crime novels and old movies’

Everyone in my family growing up had a sweet tooth, and unfortunately still does. At one stage my mother worked out that my father had spent over £30,000 on chocolate bars during his working life . . . and all seven of their children ended up loving chocolate.

It's something that binds us, along with crime novels and boxed sets and old movies. Some of our happiest times together would have been all of us sitting around watching a classic like Bring Me the Head of Alfredo Garcia with a box of Black Magic (sadly not as nice now as they once were) to pass around.

I was always amazed at families who could keep a box of chocolates on the go for days, or even weeks on end. In our house, if a box appeared, the chances are that one of us would already have eaten the bottom layer, and then replaced the cellophane as new.
