New knickers: a peek at the lingerie trends you’ll love this season

Dominique McMullan visits Brown Thomas to view this season’s lingerie and better understand the upcoming trends

Despite the weather, ladies in lingerie strutted their stuff in Brown Thomas this morning, displaying the new season’s collection. Brands like L’Agent Provocateur, Stella McCartney, Maison Lejaby, and Simone Perele were on show while a swimwear section was also included with exclusive ranges from Seafolly Moschino, JETs ‘White Lable’, Michael Michael Kors and Trina Turk. The styling from Sinead Keenan was influenced by La Dolce Vita and 1960s Italian glamour. This translated into beehive hairstyles, heavy catflick eyeliner and an air of Brigitte Bardot.

The show took off with shapewear, and with pieces you would be proud to be seen in. No flesh coloured sausage legs here; indeed pieces from brands like Triumph could almost be confused for ‘show’ wear with delicate lace detailing and pretty feminine patterns. The go-to brands like Spanx and Wacoal continue to innovate with designs to go under every cut of dress made in lighter, more breathable material. A stand-out piece was a ‘U plunge’ bra from Fashion Forms, a seamless creation to provide support under very low cut dresses and tops.

Next was the more trend driven lingerie, and two very distinct themes emerged. When you are purchasing under-garments this season you will have to choose; naughty or nice? In the nice corner you will find a candy coloured palette of sugary pinks and blues from brands like Heidi Klum Intimates and Myla. Feminine touches are also a key trend in this category seen in bow detailing and scalloped edges. Pattern remained to minimum apart from in a few stand out pieces featuring floral and botanic prints.

In the naught corner and for those looking for something a little more risqué, influences of the fifty shades variety could be found; think black, stockings, suspenders and lace detailing. Further along this line of influence, pieces featuring strapping and peekaboo cutaways were found in brands like Blubella.

The swimwear section was the standout of the morning and one-pieces stole the show. This seasons 70s theme worked its way through to swimwear and could be recognised in a beautiful orange-mustard swimsuit by Bower, a printed kimono by Seafolly and a psychedelic jumpsuit by Beautiful Bottoms. Breton stripes were also a trend that was picked up on and shown in a one-piece by Michael Kors and a bikini by Heidi Klein.
