It has been so successful that the formula has never changed. Astral hit the market back in 1950, and no one has looked back since. It can be used for everything from make-up removal to soothing razor rashes, but its hydrating qualities make it an equally good body and facial moisturiser, and its rich texture makes it feel far more luxurious than its €10.99 price tag would suggest.

L'Oréal Elnett Satin hairspray €7.50
It's oddly comforting to use a product that you are as likely to find on your granny's dressing table as you are on Cheryl Cole's. Unlike many other hairsprays, Elnett doesn't leave your hair crunchy but, even so, manages to keep a strong hold, making it a staple of stage performers and nightclub hoppers alike. I was impressed that it didn't dry out my short hair. The floral scent is so-so, but Elnett can't be beaten for doing what it says on the tin.

Yardley London English Lavender Talcum Powder €11.49
If you want to truly channel vintage make-up trends, look no further than talc. Yardley's signature scent was launched in 1873 and it is as sophisticated now as it was then. Although I'm not the biggest fan of talc, this one's fresh scent won me over, along with the silky feel it gave my skin – and I love being able to say "I'm just going to powder my nose".

Maybelline Great Lash mascara €7.49
Maybelline Great Lash mascara is possibly the one make-up product that practically all women have owned at some point. The iconic pink and green tube remains highly popular ever since it first came out in 1971. For the price, you can't expect amazing quality – it is clumpier than other, more expensive products, but it adds impressive length to your lashes. A handbag staple.

Revlon Super Lustrous lipsticks €11.49
Revlon's Super Lustrous range – available in crème, matte, pearl and sheer shades – will never get old. Its 82 shades offer more than enough choice at a reasonable price. My personal favourite is Sultry Sable, a plum shade suitable for evenings and winter. The lipsticks are creamy and moisturising, and shine without being too glittery.

Elizabeth Arden 8 Hour Cream €35
A cult product for a reason, and one no beauty mogul should be without. An excellent choice for helping with dry skin, and it also comes in handy on long flights to keep moisturised. It's a true all-rounder with too many uses to list, but I like it particularly to put on my eyebrows to keep them in place throughout the day, and as a highlighter on the cheekbone.
