VOWS:AOIFE O'GORMAN and Justin Sherriff, both professional hockey players, were married on May 23rd at St Mary's Church in Enniskerry, Co Wicklow by Fr John O'Connor.
Aoife, from Cabinteely, is the daughter of Barry and Frances O’Gorman and she has one sister, Niamh and a brother, Ross. She attended Loreto Foxrock all the way up from primary to secondary level, and has a degree in business studies from Portobello College. She coaches hockey and other sports at Loreto Dalkey.
Justin is the son of Richard and Doloreen Sherriff, and he grew up in Dalkey with one older brother, Marc, and his sister Aisling. He attended St Andrew’s College in Booterstown and played underage and senior hockey for Ireland, gaining 90 caps. He works for the Quiksilver clothing company, a specialist in sportswear.
The couple met in Belgium, where Justin was playing for the Dragons, and Aoife was on a college hockey trip in Antwerp. That was six years ago. They became engaged in New York last February, when Justin, as a surprise, steered Aoife toward Tiffany’s to select an engagement ring. It was her birthday and he had made an appointment in advance so that they were greeted at the door and given red carpet treatment. The bride chose a Vera Wang dress in New York, which she later purchased in Brown Thomas, and they had four attendants each – Suzanne Sullivan, Jane Coyne, Shona Doyle and Jane Geldof for the bride and Ciaran Nolan, David Lennon, Gordon Elliott and best man Ronan O’Grady for the groom.
Their wedding day coincided with the Heineken Cup final in Edinburgh and, knowing their friends well and not wishing to have a divided party, they organised for a large screen to go up in a room in Powerscourt so everyone would stay together and watch the match. Leinster’s win, needless to say, added to the general euphoria of the day.
They had a barbecue for friends the day after the wedding and for their honeymoon, they are planning a trip to Australia next December.
