Sandwich boards and street clutter

A chara, – The chief executive of the Restaurants Association of Ireland, Adrian Cummins, recently took issue with Dublin City Council's planned drive against on-pavement sandwich boards and other obtrusive commercial advertising ("Council warns of crackdown on businesses cluttering paths", January 6th).

A moment’s reflection would convince him that such unuthorised commercial clutter does nothing to attract tourists to Dublin.

Why would it? It’s ugly, it’s in the way and it’s unnecessary. It impedes pedestrians’ progress and poses a real danger to the visually challenged and those who push prams.

If in doubt take a look along the axis Dame Street to Wexford Street. Those who seek out a “Burger plus drink for €10” (tap water extra) should use their olfactory senses instead, and good luck to them.
