Four members of family killed in Co Wexford crash

Four people have died following a collision between a car and lorry on the main New Ross to Wexford road.

Three men and a woman were all pronounced dead at the scene of the collision which happened at Begerin Hill between New Ross and Ballinaboola on the N25 at around 6.30pm on Monday.

The four deceased, understood to be a couple in their 70s and their two sons in their 40s, are an Irish family living in the United States who had returned to Ireland to attend a funeral.

The car and lorry were both travelling eastwards towards Wexford.

Gardaí are investigating the possibility that the collision happened when the car went to turn right.

The collision happened at a bend near Cushinstown church and it is under the casualties were trapped in their car by the crash.

Firefighters from New Ross and Wexford town had to use cutting equipment to remove the four victims from the car to allow paramedics attend to them.

All four were pronounced dead at the scene and their bodies were later removed by ambulance to University Hospital Waterford in Ardkeen for postmortem examination.

The driver of the truck, a man in his 40s and his helper, a man in his 30s, were physically uninjured in the collision but both were badly shaken and were treated for shock at the scene.

Gardaí closed the road and diversions were put in place. The road remained closed on Tuesday morning to allow a forensic crash investigator examine the scene. It is expected to re-open on Tuesday afternoon.
