What’s on Saturday: Ed Sheeran, Gigantic, Truss and Étienne De Crécy

BIRTHDAY

Electric 3rd Birthday Party
Electric Galway, 10pm, €12/€10, electricgalway.com

Three is the magic number as the Galway club marks three years of wild nights in the city with, of course, three acts – Tensnake, DMX Krew and Daniel Wang – playing across three rooms. Tensnake is German DJ and producer Marco Niemerski, the dude behind infectious house cuts such as Coma Cat and Love Sublime, his cut with Chic's Nile Rodgers. Daniel Wang has been at the top of disco and house game since his Balihu label days, while DMX Krew's Edward Upton is the man to turn to for mischievous, wham-bam electro highs from drum'n' bass to straight-up techno.

TECHNO

Truss
Twisted Pepper Dublin, 11pm, €14/12, soundcloud.com/truss

Tom Russell’s tough, bracing techno has won many fans over the last few years. He’s a regular visitor to Dublin and previous visits to the Middle Abbey Street venue have been well received. Beyond the club work, his releases as Truss and MPIA3 for such labels as Donor’s Miniscule label, Perc Trax, Synewave and R&S have spread the word. Support from Giles Armstrong and Subject’s Eavan.

INDIE

Gigantic
Halo Galway, 11pm, €10

Back in the day, Gigantic was a regular mainstay in these pages. A club night featuring lashings and lashings of indie anthems, alternative hits, pop gems, leftfield breaks and smashing beats from across the spectrum, Gigantic enjoyed a good run for six years and 300 nights. A year after its last night out, Gigantic re-appears for another one-night-only hurrah with old favourites Olive, Tom and Mac at the helm.

SINGER-SONGWRITER

Ed Sheeran
Croke Park, Dublin, 6pm, €80-69.75, Ticketmaster.ie

Two sold-out gigs at Croke Park for a guy with a guitar and a mere two albums under his belt? How he’ll hold 80,000 per night in the palm of his hand will be interesting – he has some good songs, but Croker is a big space to fill for someone with as little bluff and bluster as Sheeran (left). Support acts on Friday are BellX1 and Gavin James; tonight it’s BellX1 and Jamie Lawson.

HOUSE

Étienne De Crécy
Hangar, Dublin, 10.30pm, €12, etiennedecrecy.fr

It may be time for a French Touch revival, on the back of current film Eden inspired by those 1990s' glory days. Étienne De Crécy was one of the names closely associated with that era, a producer whose work as Motorbass and especially Super Discount soundtracked many nights out. De Crécy has brought back the Super Discount name for his latest project, Super Discount 3, featuring collaborations from De La Soul, Alex Gopher, Baxter Drury and others.
