A SET of four Victorian cast iron urns exceeded its top estimate at a James Adam's sale last Wednesday, fetching £7,600 under the hammer.
The matching urns were far and away the best items among a small collection of garden furniture that gave the sale a summer interest. There were several pairs of Victorian urns for sale, including lot 363, a pair of ovoid form urns with handles, which made £2,300 and lot 365, two more Victorian urns, with egg and dart moulded rims, on pedestal bases, which made £1,400.
An extensive 19th century Louis XV style carved gilt wood drawing room suite sold for £7,200, and a French Louis XV style king wood vitreen made £2,400. A rosewood, secretaire Wellington chest sold for £1,700 and a Victorian twin pedestal desk with a red tooled leather top made £1,650.
A Victorian three tier whatnot with lyre shaped end supports fetched £1,400 against a catalogue estimate of £400-£440. A 19th century inlaid oval centre table sold for £1,600.
At Thomas P. Adams's auction in Blackrock last Tuesday a William IV mahogany side table fetched the highest price of the day, making £1,050. An Edwardian inlaid mahogany gentleman's wardrobe sold for £700 and an Edwardian rosewood and marquetry inlaid music case made £530.
Among the silver lots an Irish George III three piece silver tea set, weighing 33 ozs and made in Dublin in 1810, sold for £400.
