Ní fheicim na fáinleoga sa spéir níos mó. Tá siad imithe más fíor do mo shúile. Ann. As. Tá deireadh go cinnte leis an tsamhradh; tá néalta sa spéir agus cuma chantalach ar an loch anois. Ní chorraíonn na sléibhte. Ba iad na fáinleoga a spreagfadh na súile; ba iad a mhúsclódh as do shuan tú. Nach ait mar a thugann muid gean d’éin; nach ait mar a chuireann a n-imeacht cumha orainn?

Ní raibh ábhar gearáin ar bith ag na fáinleoga i mbliana. Bhí aimsir ar dóigh cois locha agus bhí cothú mór maith le fáil i gcuileoga an locha i rith an ama. Ach tugann gach aon rud a sheal. Casann rotha mór an tsaoil. Imíonn an t-am. Géilleann ráithe amháin don dara ráithe. Agus amharc ar na focail ar fad atá ag Ó Dónaill don fhocal ‘séasúr’: séasúr an earraigh, séasúr na curadóireachta, séasúr na móna, séasúr an fhéir, séasúr na scádán, séasúr an fhiaigh. Sea, tá deireadh le séasúr an fhéir agus tagann séasúr eile sna sála air.

Ag an Phiarsach a fhágfar an focal scoir faoin fháinleog, an “toirt bheag dhubh aneas” mar a thug sé uirthi: “Ó thús lae bhí na céadta fáinleog bailithe le chéile ar mhullach an tí. Ó am go ham d’imíodh ceann nó péire acu agus d’fhilleadh arís, mar a bheidís ag breathnú ar an aimsir. Faoi dheireadh d’imigh péire agus níor fhill siad. D’imigh péire eile. D’imigh an tríú péire. Bhí siad ag imeacht i ndiaidh a chéile ansin ...”
