Níl ann ach féar. Ní dhéanann muid iontas de. Seans nach dtugann tú aird ar an fhéar go dtí go mbíonn an t-am ann an gairdín a lomadh. Sin an caidreamh a bhíos ag cuid mhór againn leis an fhéar – fásann sé agus lomann muid é.

Ní hamhlaidh an scéal ag an fheirmeoir. Tá ábhar bia le fáil san fhéar – sadhlas agus eile – don gheimhreadh. Tá páirceanna móra féir sa cheantar ina gcónaím agus déanaim amach go bhfuil siad lomtha faoi thrí ag feirmeoirí faoin am seo. Feicim cairn mhóra dhubha sadhlais agus mé ar mo thaisteal, iad ina luí sna páirceanna, ag fanacht leis an turas chun an sciobóil.

Is maith an toradh a bhí le baint as na páirceanna an samhradh seo – dea-aimsir ghrianmhar agus go leor fearthainne leis an fhéar a chur a fhás. Talamh glas na hÉireann, ag tabhairt uaithi as a stuaim féin.

Agus seo na ba – seanmhaoin na nGael – sna páirceanna, ag ithe an fhéir, radharc laethúil ar chultúr ársa. Tá dearmad déanta againn ar thábhacht an fhéir.

“Le teacht an fhéir – when the grass begins to grow, in the spring” atá ag Ó Dónaill ar ghné amháin den fhéar, abairt bheag a cheanglaíonn an féar lenár saol laethúil, leis an tsolas. “Bhí sé ag cur féir (is uisce) óna chosa – he was travelling fast” abairt ar ghné dár saol oibre!

Agus gné eile ar fad: “ag tabhairt an fhéir – under the sod, in the grave”. Ach ní inniu, buíochas do Dhia.

Inniu, is i gcuideachta an fhéir agus na gréine atá muid.
