Bás faoi ghrian an tsamhraidh. Is den spéir an fháinleog. Is minic a bhíonn cuairteoirí seo na hAfraice le feiceáil cois locha, iad ag sceanadh an aeir idir spéir agus talamh, agus iad ag ithe chuileoga an locha. Aimsíonn siad bia abhus agus tearmann.

Bhí mé ar saoire seal ar oileán beag mara sa Mheánmhuir agus chonaic gunnadóirí ag scaoileadh leo i dtreo na neimhe. “Tá siad ag scaoileadh na bhfáinleog ar a mbealach chun na mór-roinne,” a dúradh liom.

Gníomh gránna ar fad!

Ní mar sin atá saol na bhfáinleog abhus. Tá cead a gcinn acu eitilt leo fud fad na firmiminte. Gunna ná gunna ní ardaítear ina dtreo sna bólaí seo. Ach baineann tubaiste le saol an chuairteora anois agus arís ina ainneoin sin. Carr, déarfainn, a thug bás na fáinleoige seo. Bhí an carr róthapa ag an éan lúfar seo. Fuair an talamh greim marfach uirthi agus beidh rian den dath dúghorm in ithir na hÉireann go deo. Níl fágtha anois ar an ród ach cleití ach d’aithneofá cé leis iad.

Rinne an fháinleog turas mór fada ón Afraic ach ní fhillfidh sí ar a críocha dúchais lena cuideachta féin go deo.

Sin agat scéal an éin seo.

Tháinig dán Chathail Bhuí chun cuimhne: “A bhonnáin óig, is é mo mhíle brón/Thú bheith sínte fuar i measc na dtom,/Is na luchaí móra ag triall chun do thórraimh,/Ag déanamh spóirt agus pléisiúir ann.”

Tá an fháinleog marbh ach maireann an file!
