An crotach – cuairteoir gan choinne sa ghairdín

Cúpláil ná cúpláil ní raibh ar siúl!

An rud is annamh... cat nach n-itheann luchóg, madadh nach gcránn cat, crotach sa ghairdín. Fan, crotach sa ghairdín? Bhí orm an dara hamharc a thabhairt ar an éan a bhí faoin tom. Éan a bhí ann gan amhras ach éan as áit.

Ní fhaca mé riamh éan den tsórt seo sa ghairdín ach bhí aithne shúl agam air mar sin féin. Nach raibh? Chonaic mé an t-éan seo roimhe áit éigin ach cá háit? Cois uisce... Crotach! Crotach!

An “gob millteanach fada agus é curtha anuas” a sceith rún an éin sa deireadh. Sea, crotach a bhí ann ach ní éan de chuid an ghairdín é sin. Bíodh sin mar atá, is sa ghairdín a bhí sé agus é ag cuimilt a ghoib ar an fhéar nuabhearrtha.

(Damnú ar an dea-aimsir a bhí againn, dea-aimsir a thug orm an lomaire a thabhairt amach as an gharáiste arís eile!)

Tugann an t-eolaí póca le fios “cé go gceaptar gur éan inbhear é is minic a fhanann sé i bpáirceanna riascacha agus a leithéidí le linn shéasúr na cúplála”.

Cúpláil ná cúpláil ní raibh ar siúl sa ghairdín! M’anam le Dia! Éan aonair a bhí anseo.

Bhí eagla orm go raibh an t-éan gortaithe. Dhruid mé ina threo. Mhothaigh an t-éan mé agus shocraigh é féin ní ba dhoimhne san fhéar. Dhruid mé ina threo arís eile. Bhí an dochar déanta agam. D’eitil an crotach in airde agus d’imigh soir. Tugann an t-eolaí póca le fios gur éan “an-scinnideach” atá ann. Is trua liom nár léigh mé sin sular scanraigh mé an crotach, cuairteoir annamh...
