1. Buy local. Drinking locally produced drinks, such as fruit juice gives money to local people - drinking Pepsi or Coke gives money to Western corporations. Buy locally made souvenirs where possible (but avoid anything made from coral, ivory, animal skin or wildlife).
2. Save natural resources. Try not to waste water and always switch off lights, TV and air-conditioning when you go out.
3. Support locally owned or operated tourism initiatives
4. Always ask before photographing or videoing people.
5. Respect local etiquette. If you don't offend local people by wearing skimpy clothes or kissing in public, for example, they are more likely to be friendly.
6. Respect the environment. Don't pick flowers, drop litter or cigarette stubs, or use detergents in streams or springs, and keep to marked paths when walking or climbing.
7. Only visit tribal people on tours they endorse - don't accept vague assurances from your guide that "it's okay".
8. Don't give money or sweets to children. It encourages begging - a donation to a local community project or school is more constructive.
