Bernadette Kiely’s work is based on the close observation of nature and the rural environment, round the clock and through the seasons.

The seasonal cycle, and the signs that mark moments of change within it, have featured in different ways in her paintings and drawings. In this, her most recent body of work, she considers two organic processes occurring at widely differing speeds. One is the incrementally slow growth of lichen. Lichens are both durable and fragile: they thrive in extreme environments, but can be acutely sensitive to changing conditions. The other subject she addresses is the recurrent flooding of the River Nore as it overflows its banks along the quay where Kiely lives in Thomastown. She focuses on the richly textured surfaces of plants, water and fields, finding an incredible visual richness in the inexorable unfolding of natural processes.
