An enormous collection of documents referring to a family estate in Yorkshire is likely to be the highlight of this afternoon's auction at Whyte's of Dublin. Spanning almost 400 years from 1591, the archive runs to thousands of items dealing with the expansion of the Atkinson-Jowett estate, covering Bolton, Horton, Allerton, the city of Bradford and many other parts of northern England. Included among the papers are grants, leases and legacies, marriage settlements and copies of acts of Parliament relating to lands and properties on the estate. According to Ian Whyte, there is considerable interest in this archive from a number of Yorkshire collectors and institutions. A member of the Atkinson-Jowett family moved to Ireland and brought the 10 deed boxes here but after today they will probably return back across the Irish Sea. The entire collection comes up as a single lot, with an estimate of £3,000-£4,000. There are, of course, plenty of items of Irish interest among the 700-plus lots in the sale of books, manuscripts, maps, posters and related ephemera. A variety of Aer Lingus and Bord Failte posters dating from the 1950s and designed by Guus Melai are expected to make between £40 and £100 each.

A letter from Countess Markievicz to Mrs Francis Sheehy-Skeffington dated September 1921 has an estimate of £250-£300, as does both a first issue of Irish War News, issued on the second day of the 1916 Easter Rising, and Roque's Map of the Kingdom of Ireland.

More than 50 lots relate to railways, such as a collection of approximately 1,500 Co Donegal train tickets (£400-£500), while the 150 lots of postcards include a large number of Irish topographical views from 1900-1950, which should individually make between £10 and £50. The sale starts at 2 p.m.
