For plenty of barbecue bargains, read on – sunshine is unfortunately not included, writes CAROLINE MADDEN
Barbecue bargains to set your weekend alight
It can only be described as the triumph of hope over experience, but many of us will be tentatively making plans to host barbecues over the bank-holiday weekend – despite the fact that we’ve just endured the wettest July on record. However, on the assumption that our optimism will, for once, be rewarded, and that the sun will suddenly burst forth at exactly 5pm tomorrow evening, we’ve rounded up some of the best barbecue deals going at the moment.
Superquinn has a number of tempting specials. Pick up two packs of burgers or grill steaks for €6, and two packs of skewers, ribs, kekabs or grilling chops for €10. And 2kg bags of Bord na Móna instant light charcoal have been reduced from €6 to €4.
Over on the other side of the tracks, Lidl has reduced its Bally Manor BBQ hot and spicy chicken wings by 33 per cent from €4.49 to €2.99, and marinated chicken thighs and drumsticks are now 30 per cent cheaper at €3.49.
Moving on to arguably the most important ingredient of any successful barbecue – hard liquor – rumour has it that Dunnes Stores is currently selling 24 bottles of 330ml Tiger beer for €19.99. Stocks won’t last long at that price, so Tiger aficionados should nip out to their nearest Dunnes as soon as they spot the boss leaving early for the long weekend.
Meanwhile, Lidl has good deals this week on Belgian beers Hoegaarden and Leffe, with both selling for €2.99 per 750ml bottle.
For its current €4 weekly wine wonder offer, Tesco has selected Marqués de León (red and white), while the Next Door off licences are selling bottles of red, white and rosé Canti this weekend on special offer at €6.99.
And for the teetotallers and designated drivers, few non-alcoholic drinks are as satisfying as Copella apple juice, now reduced by 24 per cent in Lidl to €1.79 a bottle.
Of course, there’s little point in displaying those impressive barbecuing skills if you can’t showcase your refined taste in background music as well. For anyone who still hasn’t jumped on the iPod bandwagon, there are several second-hand models going (relatively) cheap on adverts.ie. As of today, Aldi is selling iPod docking stations for under €40.
Several supermarket chains are offering bank-holiday breakfast deals that should help to repair the damage if you’ve had a few too many Tigers the night before. SuperValu’s deal consists of Shaw’s traditional rashers, sausages and mini-pudding, plus a Dairygold spread, for €6. However, it’s a close call between this offer and Tesco’s three for €4 deal, which includes Denny gold sausages, a choice of maple or traditional rashers, and black or white pudding.
Wake up to a great sports offer
Why not escape the suburbs and hit the waves with a sleek new Pegaso Wakeboard, on special offer from – yes, you’ve guessed it – Lidl for €149.99? Combining elements of water-skiing, snowboarding and surfing, wakeboarding ticks all of the boxes for adrenalin-junkies.
