Newcomers O’Neill and Curry are engaging as preteens who impulsively escape their drab Dublin housing estate for the city centre, in what proves to an eventful long night’s journey into day. DVD extras include an out-takes reel, a making of featurette and a candid running commentary by the actors.

Stone’s film boasts an astutely chosen cast led by Brolin, who portrays George W Bush as an intellectually and emotionally immature, overshadowed and unloved by his father. Sketchy and shallow as it is, and lacking in significant revelations or fresh observations, the film still exerts an irresistible fascination.

ZACK AND MIRI MAKE A PORNO ★★★
Directed by Kevin Smith. Starring Kevin Smith, Elizabeth Banks, Craig Robinsion, Jason Mewes, Jeff Anderson, Traci Lords

Can two platonic friends find true love when they co-star in a porn picture? That’s the premise of Smith’s provocative movie, peppered with expletives, political incorrectness and simulated sex. Yet, at its core, this entertaining romp is an unexpectedly appealing, sweet-natured romance.

BRIDESHEAD REVISITED ★★
Directed by Julian Jarrold. Starring Matthew Goode, Ben Whishaw, Hayley Atwell, Emma Thompson, Michael Gambon
12 cert

Largely useless adaptation of Evelyn Waugh’s delightfully barmy novel, in which virtually everything has been botched. The attempts to make sense of the characters’ motivations – Charles Ryder is now after Sebastian Flyte’s money – are totally misguided and the supporting players all appear drugged. Still, it looks pretty enough.
