Singer pulls rescheduled tour dates and says next album, NVDA, will be her last release

Sinéad O’Connor has announced her retirement from touring and from working in the record business.

In a Twitter post on Friday, the singer wrote: “This is to announce my retirement from touring and from working in the record business. I’ve gotten older and I’m tired.”

There will be “no more touring or promo” she said, adding that NVDA in 2022 will be her last release.

“It’s been a forty-year journey. Time to put the feet up and make other dreams come true,” another Twitter post read.

Speaking on the Brendan O'Connor show on RTÉ on Sunday morning, the 54 year-old singer said it was not sad news and people shouldn't view her retirement as a bad thing — she was getting older and needed to move on to other things.

All shows which were originally set for 2020, rescheduled to 2021 and then to 2022 are going to be pulled, she said. The singer had 16 shows lined up across Europe and the United States, including four shows in Ireland.

Fans expressed their sadness at the announcement on Twitter. “I’m truly saddened, I will never have an opportunity to see you... Love you enough to let go of my dream. Best wishes,” one woman posted. Others said they were grateful to have seen her perform in previous years.

“It’s not sad news. It’s staggeringly beautiful news. A wise warrior knows when he or she should retreat,” O’Connor said in another Twitter post. “Because this soldier woman has grown old quicker than Covid.”

The singer’s memoir Rememberings came out this month and she has recently been hired as a diarist by the Sunday Independent.
