It’s a weekend of the old and the new. The RTÉ National Symphony Orchestra’s former principal conductor, Gerhard Markson (above), returns to revisit one of the peaks of his time in Dublin, when he conducted a complete cycle of the Bruckner symphonies. He conducts the Eighth on Friday, and the mammoth work has the whole programme to itself.

The Orchestra of St Cecilia is striking out in a new direction on Sunday, and playing in a new venue. Having completed its 10-year survey of Bach’s sacred cantatas at St Ann’s Church, the OSC is moving to the south side of St Stephen’s Green, to Newman University Church, to tackle the symphonies of Haydn. Proinnsías Ó Duinn conducts, and the first programme includes Symphonies 1, 35 and 70, one each from the 1750s, the 1760s and the 1770s.

The series runs until March 13th, with three symphonies in each programme; there will be no concert on February 27th.
